Why Coloring and Drawing Are More Than Just Fun
Many people think that coloring or drawing is just for fun. Some even say, “It will not make a child into anything more than an artist.” But I have seen with my own eyes that coloring and drawing do so much more for little ones.
What I See in My Classroom
When my children sit with crayons, pencils, or paints, they are not just making pretty pictures. They are:
Learning to Focus – A child who colors learns to sit in one place and finish what they started.
Using Their Hands Better – Holding crayons helps them write better later.
Learning Colors and Shapes – They start noticing small details in the world.
Telling Stories – A picture of a sun and a house is a story in their mind.
Feeling Proud – When they show me their drawing, their eyes shine with happiness.
Why It’s Not a Waste of Time
I believe that coloring and drawing open the door to many skills.
A child may not become a painter, but they may become:
An architect who designs beautiful buildings
A scientist who draws what they see in experiments
A designer who makes clothes, cars, or toys
Or simply a person who enjoys beauty in life
Even if they do none of these, drawing helps them think better, feel better, and grow better.
My Little Promise to My Students
In my class, I will never take away the crayons and say “Enough drawing.” I know that each line, each color, each picture is part of their learning.
I will always clap for their art and tell them, “You made something special today.”
